HISTORY OF THE KINGDOM OF WÜRTTEMBURG, GERMANY
The southern areas of Württemberg were at the heart of the medieval
duchy of Swabia while the area that is north of Stuttgart was a part of
Franconia. The name, originally spelled Württemberg, is derived from a castle
of the same name located on the Roten Berg (red mountain) which lies south of
Stuttgart. The first known ancestor of the current ruling family is Count
Conrad (1081-92) and the succession of rulers began with Count Ulrich I (1241-
65). The establishment of inheritance or succession of the firstborn was
established, unlike other areas in Germany, in this kingdom at an early date
in its history.
In 1803 Württemberg was granted electoral dignity and, in 1805, was
raised to a kingdom by Napoleon. It became a member of the Confederation of
the Rhine and was an ally of France until after the battle of Leipzig in
1813. It entered the German Confederation in 1815 as a constitutional
monarchy. When the German Empire was founded in 1871, Württemberg became a
member and was granted certain privileges.
The Kingdom claimed universal literacy over the age of ten years and,
in 1649, Württemberg became the first German territory to introduce mandatory
elementary education. Possessing rich meadowlands and hills covered with
vines, it was only natural that the kingdom became an agricultural state. In
addition to agriculture, citizens of Württemberg raised considerable number of
cattle, sheep and pigs. Their principal exports included cattle, cereals,
cotton and linen fabrics, beer, wine and spirits.
The kingdom of Württemberg was joined with that of Baden on 25 April
1952 to create the present-day kingdom of Baden-Württemberg. The capital was
established at Stuttgart. In 1954 the legislature adopted the current coat of
arms for the combined kingdoms and included within it a golden deer to
represent Württemberg and a golden griffin for Baden.
